The National - Boxer (2007)

Boxer is the fourth studio album by Brooklyn-based indie rock The National. The National were worried that they wouldn't be able to follow up Alligator, that fans would be disappointed. Boxer proves their fears ungrounded - and that Alligator was no one classic wonder. It gathers momentum slowly, making for a brew so quietly potent and pulsating with repressed energy you're almost afraid to leave the room while it's playing in case it explodes messily all over the walls. The core of the album lies in a cluster of gorgeously restrained, piercingly evocative pieces built mostly from acoustic instruments.

Tracklist:

1. Fake Empire

5. Green Gloves
6. Slow Show
7. Apartament Story

Bomb The Music Industry! - Oi Pioneers!!! (2007)

They are known for their DYI ethic-punk, embodied in such actions such as distributing six albums worth of their own material for free on their website, and offering free stencils and paint for fans to create their own T-shirts. Bomb the Music Industry! plays a blend of several musical styles anchored in ska and hardcore punk. The influences go deeper than ska and punk, however, as studio experimentation, synth-pop, and DC hardcore all pop up in the mix. n live performances the band has begun using digital technology to create breakdowns that sound like they are lifted from 8-bit video games.

The Arrogant Sons of Bitches - Discography (2005)

I've noticed that a lot of you young'uns are huge fans of Bomb The Music Industry (and rightfully so, they are siiiick), but have no idea who The Arrogant Sons of Bitches are. Well in the words of one of the two rappers I regularly listen to: "You Must Learn!". Their self titled discography isn't actually everything that they ever did, as they released "Three Cheers for Disappointment" after the discography release, but it is one hell of an album with very few tracks that could be considered filler. If you love the 3rd wave (you nerd), grab a copy of the album. It's damn solid.

They Might Be Giants - Apollo 18 (1992)

Superb pop craftsmen with a hyperactive sense of caprice, John Linnell and John Flansburgh channel surreal ideas into a catchy deluge of fun. Apollo 18, the Brooklyn duo's fourth album (not counting a rarities compilation), orbits a planet on which such topics as death, culture, identity and dining can all be dispatched with melodic intelligence and a clever phrase or three. Careful not to burden airy tunes with ponderous lyrics, the Giants inflate weighty topics with enough whimsy to mask their songs' unsmiling core. Without disguising the Giants' signature sound, the album switches genres with the dial-a-style eclecticism of a jukebox.

Bomb The Music Industry! - Album Minus Band (2005)

This was the album that introduced me to free music so it seems only natural to begin with an analysis of this fantastic debut from the collective that has since spawned four further full lengths, all available for free. I can’t remember where I heard about this album but on the first few listens I was compelled by the awesome catchiness of ‘Ready…Set…No!’ to really get into this band. It was punk rock and it was free. Since those are two of my favourite things I was in no position to dislike it. Musically the songs jump back and forth through various intermingled styles: from minimal acoustic tracks that build into satisfying crescendos (‘Sweet Home Cananada’), DC-style hardcore (Frantic opener ‘Blow Your Brains Out On Live TV’) and punk rock (‘It ceases to be whining…’) whilst remaining primarily rooted in ska punk upstrokery (‘Ready, Set, No…’). Barring a few more ballad-ish numbers, the album is dominated by fast, catchy sub three minute songs.

Tracklist:

1. Blow Your Brains Out On Live TV!!!
2. Does Your Face Hurt? No? ’Cause It’s Killin’ Me!!!
3. It Ceases to Be ‘Whining’ If You’re Still ‘Shitting Blood

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - A Jacknife To A Swan (2002)

After working on their ska sound for approximately two decades, The mighty Mighty Bosstones have released A Jackknife to a Swan, which is unfortunately a day late and a dollar short. With a sound that can best be described as Smash Mouth meets ska, this 13-song album primarily consists of upbeat party songs for a good time. Yes they're fun, happy songs, good tunes to put on at a party for background music, but if ska is going to reinvent itself and be relevant as a genre, it's really got to learn how to utilize more than just the jangly guitar and punk leanings. The Bosstones had their chance and did fairly well for about a decade, but these eight fellows aren't doing anything to make exciting and creative music.

The Messengers - The Messengers (2005)

When The Messengers formed in the fall of 2000, the immediate positive response that they received made it clear that they were filling a void long left empty in the modern punk scene. Initially, forming a socially conscious punk band in the mostly conservative midwestern city of Cincinnatti seemed like a lost cause. However, their mixture of aggressive guitar-driven rock and melody has managed to turn more than a few heads in a diverse crowd. I feel like we give people real rock and roll. says guitarist Don. The sound of The Messengers is a mixture of traditional rock and roll and early American and British punk.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Me V. Angry Mob (2005)

The World/Inferno Friendship Society (commonly referred to as "World Inferno" or "Inferno") is a cabaret punk band. Its style merges punk, klezmer, and jazz, while its collective membership features horns, piano, and guitar.

This musical collective has over 30 members, including former members of Dexis Midnight Runners. Usually one can expect to see about nine or ten members on-stage when they perform. The group is led by singer Jack Terricloth and guitarist Lucky Strano, who have been the most constant members throughout the group's history. Terricloth is known for his pointed commentary during shows: his monologues have touched on politics, his transformation from the "old school", and baiting of bouncers which usually end up with the band buying drinks for the whole staff.

Shelter - Quest For Certainty (1992)

Quest for Certainty aims to serve as both a spiritual exploration and a religious affirmation of the Hare Krishna faith. If the album's instrumentation followed the lyrics' more exploratory angles, it might make for a more interesting record. Instead, the music, with its Youth of Today meets hard rock feel, clings to the more affirmative side of the fence. On the whole though, Shelter's honesty is commendable and it's hard to deny the catchiness of songs like "In Defense of Reality" and the title track.

Sublime - 40 Oz. to Freedom (1992)

40oz. to Freedom received mixed critical reviews upon its first release, but is now generally approved as a sincere record, with many spots of brilliance and ingenuity. 40oz. to Freedom is one of the most popular albums released in the third-wave of Ska. Its sound blended various forms of Jamaican music, including ska (Date Rape), rocksteady ("5446 That's My Number"), roots reegae and dub ("Let's Go Get Stoned", "D.J.s") with British and American hardcore punk ("New Thrash", "Hope"), hiphop ("Scarlet Begonias") and folk music ("Rivers of Babylon").

Telegraph - 10 Songs & Then Some (1996)

The Skolars typify everything good and bad about punk-ska. The majority of the songs are upbeat and danceable, but they also tend to sound similar. The album starts with the promising "Should've Stayed Home Tonight." The song is tight, poppy, and has interesting horn lines. After that, each track sounds less and less exciting. "Head First, Feet First" is generic punk-ska, while "She Cries" is generic, straight-ahead ska. The standout track on the album, though, is "Carry On." This song features very generic chord changes, but the horn lines make the song interesting and fun to listen to.

Toy Dolls - Singles 83/84 (1985)

"A terrible recording! We had very little time and money, loadsa equipment problems also. By the time we got things fixed we had half a day to record and mix it. Not the greatest song we have written, but we were happy with the production. Once again it was recorded and mixed in a day, since that day we still think Deidre’s a Slag should have been the A side! Again recorded at Guardian Studios, I remember Fat Bob (our roadie) thinking it was wonderful! And it wasn’t so bad actually! (Young) Pioneers - First Virginia Volunteers (1995)

(Young) Pioneers added parentheses to their name and bassist Marty Violence to their lineup as they went electric on First Virginia Volunteers. Much-improved electrified versions of three songs from Young Pioneers ("Food Stamps" and "White Like Me" are particularly good) join such excellent new originals as "Evidence Indicating Other Than Suicide," "The Whereabouts of Johnny Gosh" and the oddly upbeat "I'm So Afraid of Getting Cancer." The Pioneers are at their best when framing political discontent with catchy punk and emo, but they do dip into some ill-advised waters here. They're poorly suited to the clumsy heavy metal vibe on "Murder Has No Tongue," and "Red Tick Coonhound" should have been left to rot on the debut EP. Overall, however, First Virginia Volunteers shows a lot of creative development.

(Young) Pioneers - Free The (Young) Pioneers Now! (1998)

The (Young) Pioneers from Richmond, VA, fire up ragged blasts of blues-infused punk rock on their heroic-sounding record Free the (Young) Pioneers Now!, which combines Civil War imagery and Southern politics with raging punk numbers equipped with handclaps, a harmonica, sax, and organ. Some of the lyrics are provocative, such as "We're all jumping and shouting and full of sin/And we dream (of an albatross)/All the little babies born to young lovers/Die at the hands of bad jobs" from "Drown in the James," and there are two great covers, the Impression's "Meeting Over Yonder" and Impatient Youth's "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition."
