The Idoru - Hopeless Illusions (2005)

The Idoru is an alternative rock band from Hungary. The group was formed in 2003 with Newborn ex-members Tibi and Big on guitar, Matt on bass, Laci from the band Very Bad Thing on drums and a young singer who is able to stretch the already existing boundaries of the company. The band quickly stood up and started to play several gigs in their local area, and soon shows appeared abroad in their schedule. Spending their year to establish a base for the further actions, they've realized that it's time to shake the ground with their first record. In the fall of this year they've started the recording, and on a fantastic New Year's Eve live appearance of the band the mcd entitled After The Storm came to life. This three song debut was the product of the collaboration between the guys and an amazing label from Japan called Alliance-Trax. The band HQ was satisfied with the result, and decided a future plan with their Japanese fellows in crime. In the first days of the new year an order arrived from the country of the rising sun: Get in the studio now! In 2005 after recording their 3rd record Hopeless Illusions EP, they decided to leave Burning Season Records and join to Deadbutcher Records what is owned by their good friend Mikita, who helped them in many ways during the past few years.

Tracklist:

1. Shut Your Eyes, To Love, To Live
2. Different Ways, Different Situations
3. The Valley Of Disappointment
4. Lack Of Credibility
5. After The New Storm

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Hallowmas: Live at Northsix (2003)

"Hallowmas" is the Catholic name for the three-day festival that culminates in All Saints' Day, or in some southern climes, the Day of the Dead. It's fitting, then, that this band of South-of-the-Border-by-way-of-Brooklyn, mariachi punk rockers should title their live Halloween record Hallowmas Live at Northsix. Of course, this zany gang plays ska on this record, too ("Zen and the Art of Breaking Everything in This Room"), as well as cabaret, polka-rock ("My Ancestral Homeland, New Jersey"), Clash-inspired punk rock ("Paul Robeson"), and slow-moving, carnival-esque dirges ("One For the Witches"). It's probably the best example of what the World/Inferno Friendship Society does in terms of truly capturing the bands unique, devil-may-care iconoclasm (though as the DCN label goes, they may never top the stunning Canyon live album), but to those uninitiated to this group's swirling manifesto, the live representation of the band might be too much. This record could easily be construed as insane, and newcomers should probably start with one of their studio albums.

Tracklist:

1. Tatoos Fade
2. Zen And The Art Of Breaking Everything In This Room
3. My Ancestral Homeland, New Jersey
4. Just The Best Party

Helmet - Meantime (1992)

Meantime is the second album and major-label debut by Helmet, released in 1992. The next step after noise architects such as Fugazi and Sonic Youth, Helmet's exultantly ferocious sound boasts the brontosaurian backbeat of metal and the vehemence of hardcore. And industrial ideas about song structure prevail – exhilarating textures and rhythms propel the music, melody having been dumped out of the band's speeding car and left for dead by the roadside. Despite the homicidal fury of Hamilton's vocals, his lyrics are enigmatic telegrams, refreshingly far from the sadistic threats one might expect. The ravaged textures of Meantime are almost tactile; at its best, as in "Ironhead" or "In the Meantime," its brute minimalism is reminiscent of a monumental steel sculpture. On occasion, the music tentatively gets tuneful – it's both a welcome aberration and a hint of what this deceptively cerebral band has yet to offer. The album cover features an image of a man in a white protective suit shoveling some substance on the ground. The album has been initially available with one of two reversely-colored covers; one has a blue background with a white-on-red Helmet logo, and the other has a red background with a white-on-blue Helmet logo (pictured above).

1. In The Meantime

3. Give It

The Birthday Party - Hee Haw (1988)

The Birthday Party (originally known as The Boys Next Door) were an Australian post-punk group, active from 1976 to 1983. Hee Haw is compilation the Birthday Party's work between 1979's Dooor Door album (released under the band name the Boys Next Door) and their first "proper" album, 1981's Prayers On Fire. The earliest tracks were recorded in 1979 and are full of bizarre time signatures, weird herky-jerky rhythms, and obscure lyrics. By the time 1980 rolled around with the "Mr. Clarinet" single, things were much more focused--the band retained all of those earlier elements, but managed to put them together into a more controlled, but no less explosive, package. Later that year, the "Friend Catcher" single further honed this approach--Tracy Pew's thick, serpentine bass playing, Rowland Howard's alternately discordant and razor sharp guitars, and Phil Calvert's hammering drums. Over it all, Nick Cave's harrowing vocals delivered the obscure and intensely weird lyrics.

Tracklist:

1. Mr. Clarinet
2. Happy Birthday
3. Hats on Wrong
4. Guilt Parade
5. Friend Catcher
6. Waving My Arms
7. Catman
8. Riddle House

The Toasters - Hard Band For Dead (1996)

The Toasters' clever take on the title of Prince Buster's ska classic "Hard Man for Dead," says it all; this is a band who have soldiered on through thick and thin, determined to complete their mission of spreading ska to the masses. And to that end, the group open a window to the past, although the Buster cover apart, the band don't so much revisit ska's past as the '60s in general. The Toasters even return to their early days, revisiting "Talk Is Cheap," a track from their 1987 Skaboom! album. The group pull past and present together on their musical homage to "Chuck Berry," as Bucket lyrically traces ska's path from American R&B to the shores of Jamaica, sailing off to the U.K., and washing back up on U.S. shores with Two Tone. And the "2-Tone Army" marches on, with its "'90s beats and '50s roots," on this rousing affirmation of the third wave, whose irrepressible riddim would eventually metamorphose into the theme song for the Nickelodeon cartoon Kablam!, bringing everything full circle. With its phenomenal mix of styles old and new, a guest cast of legendary veterans and younger heroes -- King Django, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble keyboardist Cary Brown, and Ventures guitarist Jerry McGee, Hard Band epitomizes the power and glory of the third wave, while continuing to pay tribute to all those who came before.

Goodbye Cool World! is the third release by DIY collective Bomb The Music Industry!. It was released on the band’s website, as well as on a limited vinyl release. The album uses several samples, including a clip from Arrested Development at the beginning of “Old and Unprofessional”, a clip from the 1983 movie Valley Girl at the end of “My Response to an Article in Alternative Press”, and a clip of the game Galaga at the end of “Anywhere I Lay My Head”.

They Might Be Giants - Flood (1990)

Flood is the third studio album by They Might Be Giants. Being their most popular record and many fans' first exposure to the group, the album has occasionally been performed in its entirety at live shows. At some of these performances, the group essentially 'opens' for itself, taking the stage as "Sapphire Bullets: the only TMBG cover band that matters. "With all the success Flood enjoyed, some fans and critics were disarmed by its polished production and slightly sillier lyrics. The group returned to a more organic sound and darker territory on its 1992 follow-up, Apollo 18. The picture on the cover of the album features a man rowing a boat made out of washbasins strung together in a body of water. The photo was taken by Margaret Bourke-White and was part of a series of photographs taken after theOhio River Flood of 1937.

Flipslide Vinyl Fanzine Vol.3 (1987)

Flipside was a punk rock fanzine published in Los Angeles from 1977 - 2000. As one of the first and longest running US punk rock fanzines, this publication extensively chronicled the world of independent and underground music during this era. Known for its highly opinionated cast of writers, Flipside evolved from cheaply printed to glossy cover. Their articles extended to coverage of the UFO phenomenon, drugs, and independent film.
Flipside fanzine put on a Burning Man -style festival, in California's Mojave Desert at a location known as Jawbone Canyon for several years during the mid 1990s. It was much smaller and more localized than the actual Burning Man Festivals and often featured bands that Flipside put out on their own label. Pretty spotty as best... There's a great hardcore song on here by 76% Uncertain, and both Corrosion of Conformity and the Lemonheads contribute good tracks as well. Otherwise, nothing that spectacular. The Slapshot and the Circle Jerks stuff would have been better if they were not live songs (or at least better sound quality)... Like the other Flipside comp I've heard, this one has a bunch of weird sound bites between all the songs. Nice mix of bands (I'd never heard the Lemonheads' punk stuff before this - I'm glad they included that song), but overall disappointing.

Tracklist:

1. Adolescentes - "The Liar"
2. 76% Uncertain - "Critic"

Westbound Train - Five To Two (2005)

Westbound Train is a ska band from Boston. Formed in 2001. Their name originates from the Dennis Brown hit song by the same name. Good album for some good times. Pretty standard rocksteady fare with some tight brass lines. This is a group that is much stronger live then on CD. Tracks like "Talk Loud" and " Waiting for Tonight" keep this from getting stale. Still, if you're a fan of the band, or RnB tinged rocksteady, then this is a good album to pick up.

They Might Be Giants - Factory Showroom (1996)

Factory Showroom is the sixth studio album by the band They Might Be Giants. The album reclaims the more diverse and electronic sound of their early work, moving away from the live, relentlessly driving rock feel of its 1994 predecessor, John Henry. Still, Factory Showroom differed from previous They Might Be Giants recordings in several ways. While the band introduced a bassist and a drummer for John Henry, Factory Showroom was their first album to feature a second guitarist. Eric Schermerhorn played lead guitar on the album, adding solos to tracks like "XTC vs. Adam Ant", but evidently the band felt that this brand of guitar work did not mesh with their style, as Schermerhorn left the band after a short amount of touring. Factory Showroom also had, by far, the fewest number of tracks of any They Might Be Giants album up until the release of The Else, coming in at only thirteen, while no previous TMBG album had any fewer than eighteen tracks. The tracks on Factory Showroom tend to be longer than their older songs, however, so the album as a whole takes about as much time as their previous efforts.

Various Artists - European Punk Compilation (2004)

Compilations are always somewhat of a poisoned gift, and especially in today’s musical climate where anyone can make their own compilation within matter of minutes I wonder if releasing a compilation to start your label (or a re-start in this case) is really the way to go. I think compilations have long outlived their usefulness, so maybe the fact that Subversion was made for the benefit of Amnesty International can give it somewhat of a push. In my opinion, the point of a compilation is to offer the possibility to discover new bands for a fair price, and to that effect Subversion really serves its purpose. It features mostly British bands I hadn’t heard from before together with some American names in what appears to be an attempt to include some “familiar” names on the tracklist sheet.

The Swellers - End Of Discussion (2004)

The Swellers are an American Punk Rock band. Their music draws influence from melodic punk rock bands as well as alternative and indie rock from the 90's. I was pretty surprised the first time I heard The Swellers' self-released first album. Now fast forward to this fall, when their latest (and greatest) album, Ups And Downsizing was released. I was and still am very impressed with the new album which lead me to search and listen to their other releases, and that leads us to my confusion over End Of Discussion (There has to be a better way to describe that, I apologise). Anyways, End Of Discussion is a straight forward skate-punk record with clear influences from NOFX, Bad Religion, Lagwagon etc. It puzzling because I can barely hear any of that in their later releases that are pop punk. Maybe I'm not listening close enough. It is a great album nonetheless, especially "His Name is Robert Paulson" their completely badass ska song.

Tracklist:

1. Immunity
2. Anything
3. His Name is Robert Paulson
4. Sightless

The Toasters - Enemy Of The System (2002)

Enemy Of The System marked a new beginning for The Toasters. Continuing to push on after Moon Ska closed it's doors, The Toasters opted to record and release this album Asian Man Records out of California. To let the fans know the band is still alive and kicking harder than ever. Coming back with an album full of solid straight forward songs and with a raw powerful sound that seems to capture their live energy more than any other release to date. You can tell they enjoyed recording these songs. This album is a great update on an old sound. Six years later, many of these songs are still major players in The Toasters live shows and the style of writing and recording has continued on to be the standard for current Toasters material. This album came after the insanely huge line up of DLTBGYD, taking the band back to it's roots of a solid 5 piece band, for ease of touring and recording and focusing on lyrics and vocals and not so much horn driven solos. A definite need to your ska collection as it marks a new beginning in Toasters musically history.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - East Coast Super Sound Punk Of Today! (2000)

Describing the World Inferno Friendship Society isn't easy. In fact, it's damn near impossible. The band has members stretching into the double digits and styles that reach into the outer limits of space. Like a twisted vaudeville version of normal rock & roll, the group dabbles with waltzing progressions, unexpected song structures, and difficult-to-make-sense-of lyrics. East Coast Super Sound Punk of Today! is no different from any of the other material in their twisted catalogue, and it isn't uncommon for a rollicking number to dissolve into a banjo-powered breakdown before returning with even more bounce than before. There's a bit of a swing feel at some points on the record, but this is far from the revival sounds of groups like the Squirrel Nut Zippers; it instead tends more toward the sound of a circus barker outside the freak-show tent. Whether crooning about tattoos or the idea of running Dante Alighieri for president, there is rarely a dull moment in the stomping grooves and obscure humor of the band. Songs like "All of California and Everyone Who Lives in It Stinks" could succeed on title alone, but the multi-instrumentalists and tendency toward group vocals gives the record an even stronger presence, and even when the songs stop making sense, it's hard to not keep listening just to see what happens next. World Inferno is by no means an average rock band, but they are certainly a fresh change of a group and their musical philosophy is so weird that it demands to be experienced.

The Hellacopters - Disappointment Blues (1998)

Disappointment Blues is a six-song CD collecting a number of B-sides by this critically acclaimed Swedish combo. As such, it's of little interest to the casual fan, but the Hellacopters still serve up some excellent Motorhead - inspired madness, including a cover of the latter's "Speedfreak." "Long Gone Losers" is the obvious highlight thanks to its great intro riff and underlying piano tinkling from the curiously named Boba Fett.

The Toasters - Don't Let The Bastards Grind You Down (1997)

After the exuberance of Dub 56, and its thrill-packed follow- up, Hard Band For Dead those expecting yet another high octane set from the Toasters were in for a surprise. The band had taken this opportunity to downshift a gear, further hone their songwriting, and offer up a new, more mature sound. There's a bit of a muted quality to the entire set, which may be a reflection of the mix and production, but more likely reflects the band's own tight rein. Case in point is "Weekend in L.A." The original, which featured on the band's Skaboom! album, had a sense of wild abandon, the recut here may be light speeds faster, but remains closely corralled. heir younger fans would still skank madly away, but the group's older supporters could take a welcome breather and appreciate the more nuanced sound this top-notch band was now unleashing.

Disfear - Misanthropic Generation (2003)

This is the fourth assault from Disfear, one of Scandinavia’s most raging and nihilistic hardcore bands. With the prominent voice of Tomas Lindberg the combo unleashes a nearly demonic, blazing and disastrous onslaught of killing explosions! The term ‘hardcore’ is not sufficient enough to characterize the total of ‘Misanthropic Generation’. Although it does have a very much hardcore character, in terms of its strength and depth it is wrapped up in a strong metallic feeling. Lunatic voices are combined with intense power chords, severe playing and passionate guitar solos. In a few words: fast, brutal, merciless and malevolent! Definitely a must for fans of hardcore that is not dull and shallow but full of metal guts and power.

The Undertones - Dig Yourself Deep (2007)

The Undertones, the band themselves, have been basking in their pristine pop reputation since their reformation in 1999. With four original members intact and relatively recent addition Paul McLoone on vocals, the group may have struggled to break out of nostalgia corner yet they thoroughly rock it live. Following 2003's tentative Get What You Need, Dig Yourself Deep is a work that can be mentioned in the same breath as their earlier greats. A proper old-fashioned 'record', it packs in 14 songs in just under 33 minutes and plays on the group's inherent strengths, taut, densely melodic rock, embracing the past yet focussed on the future. The title track is brim full of hooks and a great addition to their canon, while the rhythmic "Fight My Corner" nods towards the O’Neill Brothers’ other great act, "That Petrol Emotion". Were it released by The Twang, this album would garner a great deal more press and airplay. Dig Yourself Deep is a very pleasant surprise. It possesses all the hallmarks of Derry's finest: brevity and panache under a wall of noise.

1. Dig Yourself Deep
2. So Close

4. Everything You Say Is Right

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Devil's Night Out (1989)

The Bosstones' debut is an energetic, skankin' party album fusing ska with punk and hard rock, with more of an emphasis on ska than the band would show on later records. The band shifts freely between styles, making Devils Night Out their most spirited, freewheeling collection of ska-core. Highlights include the humorous "Hope I Never Lose My Wallet," "A Little Bit Ugly," and "The Bartender's Song."

The Distillers - Sing Sing Death House ( 2002)

The Distillers were originally formed by Australian-born Brody Armstrong, a woman with a distinctively harsh singing voice. Ex-wife of Rancid's Tim Armstrong, Brody changed her name to "Dalle" after their divorce in 2003. Although there were significant line-up changes it was Brody who played guitar, sang, and wrote or co-wrote nearly every song on the band's three albums. Tony Bradley also played guitar and Ryan Sinn played bass. he Distillers’ Sing Sing Death House is one of the few albums in the mainstream eye that truly deserves to be referenced as punk-rock. It is nasty and contemptuous, provocative and empowering and flies by at a breakneck pace. As enthusiastic and straight-edged as Sing Sing Death House is, and for all of Armstrong's brave struggling with her emotional horrors, the album lacks a certain zeal to carry it beyond its spiritual leanings. The sense that they are capable of moving forward and making an album that could be a real watershed recording is clear. This album feels more like a stepping stone to greater things, though. Right now they have made one of the more honest and vital punk-rock records of recent memory, one of which deserves every ounce of love it has gotten.

Tracklist:

1. Sick of It All

This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb is a folk-punk band from Pensacola. This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb initially started as a new wave band, with folk singer on drums. Various Artists - Cleanse The Bacteria (1985)

Cleanse the Bacteria is a Hardcore Punk compilation LP released in 1985. It is a international compilation of early hardcore music, and represents grindcore pioneers Siege's only original official release. A bonus 12-inch came with the mail-order version on orange colored vinyl. Problem is, it's quite a bitch to find. My copy came with a huge full color newsprint poster of the cover art, but that's prolly cos' I got mine straight from the pusmort waaay back in the f'n day. Am I cool? Not really. Anyway, this has some amazing foreign hardcore on it, as well as some choice domestic shit from 7 Seconds, Poison Idea, and the all-fucking-mighty , Siege who kick down some stuff that sounds like it was recorded after the infamous demo tape. The Siege songs on this alone justify the moolah spent way back when(I'm not sure what it goes for today, but mine could probably get me a night full of decent lines and a top notch blowjob).

They Might Be Giants - Cast Your Pod Into The Wind (2000)

Superb pop craftsmen with a hyperactive sense of caprice, John Linnell and John Flansburgh channel surreal ideas into a catchy deluge of fun. Apollo 18, the Brooklyn duo's fourth album (not counting a rarities compilation), orbits a planet on which such topics as death, culture, identity and dining can all be dispatched with melodic intelligence and a clever phrase or three. Careful not to burden airy tunes with ponderous lyrics, the Giants inflate weighty topics with enough whimsy to mask their songs' unsmiling core. Without disguising the Giants' signature sound, the album switches genres with the dial-a-style eclecticism of a jukebox.

The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America (2006)

Boys and Girls in America is the third studio album by The Hold Steady. It is a Brooklyn-based rock band. The band's style has been described as a "riff-heavy mixture of classic rock," notable for its "lyrically dense storytelling." The album title is a line taken from the opening lines of the song "Stuck Between Stations" ("There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right/Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together"), which in turn refers to a quote from American novelist and poet Jack Keroua's 1957 novel On The Road and its narrator, Sal Paradise. The National - Boxer (2007)

Boxer is the fourth studio album by Brooklyn-based indie rock The National. The National were worried that they wouldn't be able to follow up Alligator, that fans would be disappointed. Boxer proves their fears ungrounded - and that Alligator was no one classic wonder. It gathers momentum slowly, making for a brew so quietly potent and pulsating with repressed energy you're almost afraid to leave the room while it's playing in case it explodes messily all over the walls. The core of the album lies in a cluster of gorgeously restrained, piercingly evocative pieces built mostly from acoustic instruments.
